5 Days – Marangu Route

After breakfast, you'll head towards Horombo Hut. The altitude gain is significant, so a slow and steady pace is recommended to acclimate properly. You'll reach the camp by mid-afternoon and can rest for the night to adjust to the altitude. Overnight at Horombo Hut (full board).

You'll start early to reach the final hut before the summit attempt. Your crew will gather water at the last water point while you progress slowly up the saddle. The alpine zone stretches out towards Kibo’s base. The progress is slow due to the low oxygen environment, but you’ll reach Kibo Hut by mid-afternoon. You will have an early dinner and rest before the night-time ascent. Overnight at Kibo Hut (full board).

Rising early, typically before midnight, you'll begin the ascent from Kibo Hut towards the peak. The night-time start offers the best chance of firm scree sections and clear summit conditions. It takes around six hours to reach Gilman’s Point and an additional 1.5 to 2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest free-standing point in the world and Africa’s highest point. After reaching the summit, you'll descend the same route with a brief stop at Kibo Hut for rest and food before continuing to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight. The final descent takes you through the heath zone and forest back to the Marangu gate. At the gate, your team will have a fresh lunch prepared, and transfer vehicles will be waiting to take you to a hotel near Arusha for a farewell dinner and either an overnight stay or a day room before departure.
