7 Days – Machame Route

After breakfast, drive to Kilimanjaro. Once formalities are completed at the gate, start your hike from Machame Route through lush afro-montane forest to Machame camp, enjoying a picnic lunch en route. Look out for unique endemic flora and the changing forest zones. Overnight at Machame Camp (full board).

Hike from Machame camp to Shira Camp. The initial section is relatively steep, gaining altitude quickly. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the trail. Today, you'll pass through the heath zone, featuring helichrysum and lobelia plants, and observe various geological features, including lava tubes and glacial valleys. Overnight at Shira Camp (full board).

Today is a "walk high, sleep low" day for acclimatization. Ascend into the alpine desert, with an optional hike to Lava Tower, before descending to Barranco camp. Lunch is a picnic on the trail. Though it's a long day, it's excellent for acclimatization. Overnight at Barranco Camp (full board).

From Barranco camp, famous for its giant groundsels (Senecio species), ascend the Barranco wall and hike through glacial valleys to Karanga camp. This is a relatively short hiking day, with lunch at Karanga camp. In the afternoon, take a walk with your guides for stunning views of Kibo's southern walls and deep glacial valleys. Today's half-day hike ascends to Barafu camp. Enjoy lunch at camp, allowing plenty of time to relax before the summit bid. The camp is in a desolate alpine desert with strong winds, but evening views of Mawenzi peak are spectacular. Have an early dinner and rest for the night. Overnight at Barafu Camp (full board).

Depart just before midnight for the final summit bid. Patience and persistence are key to reaching the summit. By dawn, most climbers reach Stella Point, with a relatively short final stretch to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. Descend to Mweka camp, aiming to arrive before dusk. Descend 4,500 feet to Mweka Gate, where your team will have a fresh lunch ready, and transfer vehicles will be waiting. Bid farewell to the mountain staff and head to the hotel near Arusha for a farewell dinner and either an overnight stay or day room.
